space mission Cassini captured a rather peculiar. This is a hexagon like a honeycomb cell, which can be seen from the north pole of Saturn.
Traveler Vessels 1 and 2, NASA had already detected more than two decades ago, so now we know that there is a short-lived phenomenon. In the new images from Cassini can see a darker second hexagon inside the first. Kevin Baines, atmospheric expert and member of phenomena Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA, said: "We've never seen anything like this on any other planet. It's a very strange structure, a geometric figure with six sides nearly equal. The dense atmosphere of Saturn is one of the last placeswhere we expected to find a regular shape. "And yet there it is.
The hexagon is similar to Earth's polar vortex, where there are winds that follow a circular pattern around the polar region, only that Saturn has a hexagonal shape. Side by side, is about 25,000 kilometers and within four planet Earths would fit him.
The new images were taken by a camera system that captures Cassini infrared light. This system can penetrate up to about 100 kilometers into the atmosphere of Saturn. Within
hexagon is a system of clouds that seem to travel at tremendous speeds. The images were taken between October 30 and 11 notNovember 2006, at a distance of 1.3 million kilometers.
At the south pole, however, is what appears to be a hurricane with a huge eye. The difference between the structures which are the two poles continues to intrigue researchers.
Once achieved to understand its dynamical nature, this long-lived polar hexagon may give us more information about Saturn and its rotation period. And we also know the reason for its geometric form, so rare in nature.
The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. Source and photo
